As a Rapid City wedding photographer, there are few things I love more than helping couples experience the magic of autumn in the Black Hills. Hannah and Parker dreamed of fall colors for their engagement session, so we planned everything around the peak of the season. These Spearfish fall couples photos capture exactly what they envisioned: vibrant color, warm light, and the feeling of simply enjoying each other.

Hannah and Parker’s Story

Hannah and Parker met in college at a bar, the kind of beginning that still makes them laugh when they tell it. Parker then proposed in Las Vegas in front of a fountain while his family pretended they were visiting for his sister’s birthday. The joy and playfulness in their story showed up so naturally during their photos.

When we started planning, Hannah shared one clear hope: fall colors. She loves the richness of the season and wanted their session to reflect that beauty. Spearfish Canyon was the perfect place to chase it.

Finding Fall Color in Spearfish Canyon

If you know the Canyon, you know how quickly fall color can slip away. The original spot we chose had turned completely bare in the single week between sessions, so we pivoted and kept exploring until we found the color we had hoped for. We ended up at a pull off near the entrance of the Canyon and wandered off trail to find pockets of glowing leaves.

Since we moved outside the canyon walls, the light was a little harsher than the soft glow I typically prefer. For these two, the result was perfect. The sunlight created bold and vibrant color that matched their energy so well.

The Moments That Made This Session

Hannah and Parker were a joy to photograph. They are fun loving, sweet, and easy to work with. Some of my favorite images came from the moments when we stepped off trail and found little slices of golden light. At one point gnats drifted around them in the sunlight and created the most cinematic effect. It was beautiful but we didn’t stay in that exact spot for long because of the bugs.

Their outfits blended effortlessly with the landscape and allowed the fall colors to shine. Everything about the session felt natural and true to them.
