As a South Dakota wedding photographer, I’m always drawn to spaces that feel connected to the land, and a Battle Creek Camping Resort wedding truly captures that grounded, earthy beauty. Tiernee and Nick chose this Black Hills campground for their late October celebration, and the mix of bohemian warmth, western charm, and authentic family connection made their day unforgettable.

Late October in the hills can be brisk, and this day certainly reminded us of that once the sun dipped behind the pines. But the lighting throughout the afternoon was gorgeous, giving us soft, golden tones before the chill settled in. Guests bundled close to the heaters inside the tents as the evening grew colder, creating the coziest, most intimate atmosphere.
Before the ceremony, we drove a few miles down the road to Tiernee’s family ranch. They chose not to share a first look, but they did exchange private vows where Nick could hear her voice without seeing her. It was tender, quiet, and so true to who they are. Moments like this are why slowing down in your timeline matters.

One of my favorite parts of the day was watching the groomsmen head out to gather the horses so they would wander back up to the fence line just in time for portraits. It added the most effortless western backdrop, perfectly paired with the earthy palette and terracotta bridesmaid dresses.
Everything about the styling felt grounded and intentional, from the natural tones to the textures that echoed the landscape around us.

Both the ceremony and reception took place at Battle Creek Camping Resort, nestled among trees and the soft hum of the surrounding hills. The ceremony began right at sunset, and even though the timeline ran just a touch behind, the light couldn’t have been more beautiful. That even, dreamy glow carried us straight into blue hour, creating a stunning backdrop for their vows and post-ceremony portraits.
It’s one of the reasons timing your ceremony close to sunset can be so magical in South Dakota. The light wraps around you in the gentlest way.

Right after the ceremony, we stepped just behind the ceremony site for portraits since the sun had dipped behind the hills about ten minutes earlier. Even without direct light, the ambient glow was beautiful, soft, even, and true to color in a way that often feels more flattering than peak golden hour. Tiernee and Nick were relaxed and joking around as we worked quickly, racing the last bit of light. In less than ten minutes, we captured a full set of portraits that felt natural and true to them.

Tiernee and Nick designed a reception space that felt cozy, lively, and unmistakably bohemian. The white tent at Battle Creek Camping Resort photographed beautifully, especially once the heaters came on and filled the space with a soft, warm glow. Their decor blended tan accents with meaningful western touches, including a cowhide branded with their last name that hung behind the head table. It was such a striking piece and set the tone for the rest of the styling. Throughout the tent were lanterns with pillar candles, pheasant feathers, empty green wine bottles, and childhood photos of the couple that added a personal touch to the tables. Every detail felt intentional and beautifully arranged, creating a relaxed atmosphere that fit the day perfectly.

Tiernee and Nick hired The Carson Brown Band for their reception, and they were such a great match for the setting. Their sound carried through the campground in a really relaxed, effortless way and complemented the western touches throughout the day. It gave the evening a comfortable, easy rhythm that felt true to the couple and the overall vibe of the celebration.

One of the most unexpected (and fun) details of their Battle Creek Camping Resort wedding was the mechanical bull from Affordable Inflatables in Rapid City. While most guests were still warming up inside the tent during dinner, a handful of brave riders ventured out to take a spin. Even though we didn’t stay far into the evening, we were able to capture some lively, joy-filled photos of guests laughing, hanging on for dear life, and fully embracing the western vibe of the day. It added a playful, memorable touch that fit Tiernee and Nick perfectly.

Tiernee and Nick made their reception entrance one of the most memorable moments of the night. Tiernee came in wearing a fur coat and sunglasses, and Nick followed with a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other. They asked me afterward if it looked badass, and it absolutely did. Their entrance was loud and full of energy, with the wedding party right behind them. One pair even cross dressed for their introduction, which had everyone laughing as the bridesmaid walked in wearing the groomsman’s clothes and he confidently made his entrance in her dress. Most of the group carried either a beer or a cigarette, which added to the carefree, celebratory feel. Once inside the tent, everyone settled in to mingle while dinner finished being set up.

This venue gives couples the freedom to create something that feels deeply personal. You can lean into the rustic landscape, the family-style atmosphere, and the slow, peaceful setting that defines the Black Hills. Tiernee and Nick’s day was the perfect example of how a campground wedding can feel elevated, warm, and beautifully intentional.
If you’re dreaming of a ceremony surrounded by pines, golden light, and an atmosphere that feels relaxed and meaningful, this venue might be the perfect fit. I’d love to help you capture your day in a way that feels true to you from start to finish.
