Spearfish Canyon Engagement Photos in Early Fall

As a Spearfish photographer, Spearfish Canyon is one of my favorite places to bring couples who want scenery that feels both peaceful and wildly beautiful. Paige and Tanner were visiting with family for the weekend, and their engagement session was the perfect excuse to explore the canyon’s bold yellow leaves and early fall glow. While the sun was still high everywhere else, the canyon walls created a soft golden hour that wrapped everything in warm, quiet light.

Meet Paige and Tanner

Paige and Tanner’s families go way back. Their dads actually grew up together, so when these two eventually connected, it was meant to be. Tanner proposed after Good Friday service, taking Paige out to Lake Mitchell under the guise of showing her a new fishing spot. Instead, he got down on one knee and asked her to spend her life with him. She said yes, of course, and that’s the moment that led us here.

A Relaxed, Fun Afternoon in Spearfish Canyon

Because they were already planning a family trip to the Black Hills, they decided to make Spearfish Canyon the backdrop for their engagement photos. It was the perfect choice. The leaves were at their brightest yellow, the creek was calm, and the canyon itself was showing off.

We wandered no more than half a mile, stopping for outfit changes at the car and following pockets of light as the sun dipped behind the canyon walls. This time of year, golden hour hits the canyon early, sometimes three to four hours before official sunset, which made everything feel soft, warm, and cinematic.

The whole session was easy and relaxed. They laughed, explored, and soaked in one of the prettiest parts of the Black Hills together, a glimpse of what their future adventures will look like.

If you’re dreaming of engagement photos surrounded by vibrant color and natural beauty, Spearfish Canyon is one of the most striking locations in South Dakota. The light, the textures, and the sense of calm all come together in a way that feels effortless and true to your relationship.
