Micah and Hailey’s session in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota was truly a delight to photograph. Despite having only 15 minutes before the sun set, this couple’s warmth and joy shone through in every image. Using prompts to keep the atmosphere light and fun, we captured authentic, candid moments that reflected their sweet connection.
Every couple’s session is unique, and my goal is to make the experience as enjoyable and natural as possible. With Micah and Hailey, my approach was to focus on 85% prompts to bring out their genuine emotions and laughter, then finish with 15% gentle poses to create timeless portraits.
Prompts are my favorite way to keep couples relaxed and engaged. Instead of stiff or awkward poses, I give suggestions that encourage movement and laughter. For Micah and Hailey, these prompts brought out their personalities and gave them space to be themselves.
When it’s time to pose, I rarely stray far from what the couple is already doing. For instance, I might adjust their hand placement, direct them to look at each other, or tweak the angle of their stance. This ensures their portraits feel genuine and comfortable, rather than overly staged.
Creating a joyful, interactive session means combining tried-and-true prompts with a touch of creativity. Here are my go-to poses and why they work so well:
This is always a hit! The couple interlocks their hands and pretends to be airplanes, moving their arms around in a playful, carefree way. Sometimes, they’ll wrap each other up in a hug or swing side to side, which always leads to laughter and genuine smiles.
Walking prompts are perfect for creating a relaxed atmosphere. Whether it’s hand in hand, bumping hips, or walking arm in arm, this simple movement allows couples to focus on each other. I encourage them to chat, joke, or even “drunk walk” for a fun twist.
This pose is playful and full of energy. It captures beautiful reactions, from laughter to sweet kisses, and always results in dynamic, heartfelt images.
A personal favorite! This prompt showcases motion and emotion, and it’s inspired by something my husband does for me. When the guy twirls his partner, it creates a romantic, whimsical feel that’s perfect for capturing smiles and happy moments.
There’s nothing like the stunning scenery of the Black Hills in Rapid City, South Dakota. The natural beauty of the towering trees, winding paths, and soft light made the perfect backdrop for Micah and Hailey’s session.
I feel incredibly blessed to work in such a breathtaking environment, where every season offers something unique. The Black Hills provide countless opportunities for creative portraits, from open fields to serene water features, all of which enhance the magic of each couple’s love story.
Micah and Hailey’s outfits were both stylish and practical for their chilly session. Dressing appropriately for cold-weather portraits is essential, and their choices served as great inspiration for future couples.
Hailey wore a cozy white sweater, paired with a black skirt, tights, and stylish boots. This outfit not only complemented the natural tones of the backdrop but also added warmth and texture. Sweater dresses with knee-high boots are another great option for winter shoots. Accessories like blanket scarves can also elevate the look while keeping you warm.
Micah’s outfit was a perfect match. He wore jeans with a long-sleeve shirt and a vest, which created a casual yet polished vibe. Vests are a great layering piece for guys, offering both warmth and style.
When planning outfits for a winter session, neutrals are always a win. They blend seamlessly with the natural environment while keeping the focus on the couple.
Even with only 15 minutes before sunset, we were able to capture a variety of images by staying intentional and efficient. By using prompts that encouraged Micah and Hailey to connect and have fun, the session felt effortless.
The result? A collection of heartfelt, joyful images that reflect their love and playful connection. This session is a reminder that even a short window of time can lead to stunning portraits when you prioritize creativity and authenticity.
